Thai Herbal Bolus Treatment:

In traditional Thai medicine, herbs are used to complement massages that treat illnesses. Herbal bolus (pack) treatment, also known as herbal heat revival, is believed to calm nerves and redirect energy vital for health. Typically, a herbal bolus consists of herbs and spices that are wrapped tightly in muslin or cotton, and then infused in hot water or steam. A herbal bolus is used in a few ways. Instead of using hands, your therapist may use the bolus to apply soothing strokes to massage you. This type of massage is said to be particularly good for muscle aches and pain resulting from excessive sport. Alternatively, the herbal bolus may be placed on various parts of your body to relieve sore muscles, stimulate circulation and refresh your skin. When infused in hot water, the resulting steam from the bolus is absorbed by your skin and inhaled. It is believed that toxins are removed from the body via the perspiration caused by the heat. Many Thai women in rural areas still swear by this treatment, which is especially popular as a post-natal therapy. Many ingredients used in a herbal bolus are commonly found in our home kitchens. For instance, lemon grass, kiffir lime and turmeric are all common ingredients used in Thai cooking. In particular, lemon grass has both antibacterial and antifungal properties, and its aroma is also a relaxant.
