Macrobiotics:

The term ‘macrobiotics’ comes form the Greek word markos, meaning long or big, and bios, meaning life. Macrobiotics is more a way of life than a therapy, and is based on the view that we are the products of and are continually influenced by our environment. It is often used with both conventional and alternative medical treatments. Proper dietary and lifestyle habits are of utmost importance. Every individual is believed to have a personal tendency towards yin and yang. If you’re more of a yin person, then consuming yang foods will help address any imbalance and thus help you achieve harmony with the environment. Organic foods are highly recommended while processed and treated food are to be avoided. Ideally a macrobiotic diet should comprise mainly brown rice and whole grains. Fresh beans and vegetables are to be included while meat, dairy products and other items are to be taken in moderation or completely avoided. A complete macrobiotic approach to diet extends even to the way food is prepared – traditional gas or wood stoves are preferred over microwave ovens; earthenware or stainless steel cookware are preferred over aluminium or teflon-coated pots and pans. Other basic macrobiotic practices include regular exercise, using products made from natural, non-toxic ingredients, and maintaining a positive outlook on life.
