Shiatsu:

The term ‘shiatsu’ is a Japanese word made up of two characters, ‘shi’ (finger) and ‘atsu’ (pressure). It refers to the gentle form of Japanese massage that originated from tui na, and despite its name, the palms and heels of the hands, forearms, elbows, knees and feet are also used to apply pressure. It is a relatively modern system, popularised just a century ago by Japanese physician Tokujiro Namikoshi. Shiatsu is holistic in nature and helps to improve the well-being of the entire body instead of only treating specific symptoms. It borrows principles from acupuncture and incorporates techniques from osteopathy, physiotherapy and other healing traditions. A shiatsu therapist applies gentle pressure to acupoints in order to restore a balanced flow of ki within the meridians; pressure is also applied over a larger area than just at the acupoints. The treatment also includes a series of body stretches along meridian passages.

Specific areas or the entire body maybe treated at one time and each session may last from 60 to 90 minutes. With manipulation and pressure, areas in the body may feel sensitive at first but this eases quickly as the treatment progresses. Unlike other massage methods, pressure is sustained and stationary rather than vigorus and moving, which allows the muscles targetted and soft tissues to relax. Designed to boost stamina, and improve digestion and concentration, shiatsu is also well-known for relieving stress and calming nerves.
