Jamu – Indonesia’s Ancient Elixir:
A tropical paradise comprising some 17,000 islands and populated by an estimated 200 million people, Indonesia is home to some 200 spas. Over the past decade, Indonesia has seen a rapid growth in its spa industry and is now second only to the United States in the number of spas in any one country. Most of the spas in Indonesia are located in Bali, and they offer a myriad of pampering treatments – scrubs, floral baths, creme baths, massages and wraps – amid scenic landscapes. A spa experience in Indonesia is said to nurture, calm, relax, detoxify and rejuvenate your body and soul all at once.
Herbs are often used in spa treatments – the traditional lulur involves the use of a herbal paste as a body scrub, while jamu, loosely translated as traditional herbal medicine, is served as a tonic drink. Jamu is made from herbs and roots and is believed to preserve inner beauty while traditional massages and other body treatments enhance outer beauty – spas are also known as beauty and health centres in Indonesia. Despite the range of treatments, spas in Indonesia, spas in Indonesia all share the same fundamental belief that the inner and outer harmony of a person must be balanced for good health. This concept of maintaining harmony and balance between man and nature is not unlike those of traditional Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurveda. Maintaining equilibrium seems to be the key to good health.
