Skin Care During The Middle Years (20s – 39)

Your 20s are the ideal years to begin a preventative routine that discourages wrinkling and aging in later years. Looking for an antioxidant moisturiser may well prevent many wrinkles from occurring. Even though in the 20s, the skin is still considered young, the cell turnover production will have dropped by about 20 percent. Therefore, exfoliating regularly will keep the renewal process going. Cleansing is as important, if not more, than in your teens – make-up removal in particular. Every last trace of make-up should be removed in the evenings to prevent pores from clogging. You may wish to invest in a specialised eye make-up remover. These dissolve substances such as mascara much more easily than ordinary skin cleansers, meaning less tugging and pulling around the delicate eye skin.

By the time your 30s arrive, any sun damage you have sustained in your teens and 20s will start to become more obvious, in the form of fine lines and freckles. Expression lines will have begun to appear around your mouth, forehead and eyes, and you may want to adjust your skincare regime to incorporate an antioxidant night cream. A routine that includes AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) will keep cell renewal at an optimum level, leaving skin looking plumped and more firm. It is important that you continue to protect your skin against the sun.

Skin Care routines are dependent on your skin types and textures. If you wear make-up, a thorough skin cleansing is required before going to bed. In the morning, toner on cotton wool (cotton ball) is usually sufficient. Give yourself a treatment mask once a week. After a mask, you should moisturise twice, as masks draw out moisture as well as toxins. If you don’t wear any make-up, a mask once a fortnight is usually sufficient. If you don’t wear make-up, use a mild toner only at night-time after cleansing. Moisturise first thing in the morning, after cleansing and toning. Cold spring water is an excellent toner.

Of course, it is impossible to turn back the clock and halt the aging process, but you can take steps to prevent skin damage and, by doing so, increase the longevity of healthy, vibrant skin.
