Reflexology To Relieve Stress

This ancient Chinese technique uses pressure point massage, most commonly on the feet, to restore the flow of energy throughout the body. It is a complimentary therapy that uses a principle of ‘whole body’ healing via the feet and hands, and uses a mix of stretching, movement and pressure. It is thought that areas on the feet or hands directly link to other body parts via the nervous system, and that by applying pressure to these links, sensory nerves carry information to the brain, in turn stimulating it to function in another body part more effectively. The benefits of reflexology are thought to be mainly related to stress reduction and restoration of equilibrium. After a long day, it is a natural reaction to kick off your shoes and rub your feet – an instinctive action that mimics reflexology, so you may have done some basic reflexology, it is best to use either your computer to download a reflexology chart or to buy a chart available at any good health or complementary therapy store. The chart outlines which parts of the feet relate to other organs. Reflexology is easily done in the bath or while relaxing in a comfortable chair. Aim to ensure your feet are washed first, and do not massage any areas that are tender, cut, inflamed or bruised.

Using an oil or lotion, your hands can flow easily over your feet, but take care when standing up as your feet may still be slippery. After locating the areas you want to target, use fingers, knuckles or palms to massage. You should not be in any discomfort but exert a reasonable amount of pressure. A very simple way to enjoy the benefits of reflexology without the aid of chart is to invest in a foot tub that will produce bubbles and jets to gently give your feet an all-over treatment.

Some practitioners believe that treatment should not be attempted during pregnancy or if you have heart problems, thrombosis or shingles. If in any doubt, ask your doctor. A good technique is the thumb / caterpillar walking technique:
1. To walk the thumb, bend only the fist joint of the thumb slightly and then unbend the joint slightly. The walking movement is always performed forwards, never backwards.
2. Move to a different part of the foot, ensuring that you maintain a constant, steady and even pressure.
3. An on-off-on-off pressure should not be felt at each bend of the thumb. Do not worry if your thumbs start to ache or feel sore at first. Make sure you cover the edges of the foot, too.
4. When carrying out thia technique towards the bottom of the foot, ensure you get leverage by cupping the level with your four fingers.
5. As the thumb is walking, the four fingers should be moulded to the contours of the foot.
6. The four fingers should be kept together comfortably to ensure maximum leverage. If they are spread out the some of the leverage will be lost.
