What Is Cosmetic Allergy And How Is It Caused

Cosmetic allergy is manifested by skin eruptions, swelling of tissues, itching and many other symptoms. If you find that you are breaking out into any of the above symptoms and discover that you have used a new lipstick, powder and cream then you should immediately eliminate the encounter with the offending agent. We groom ourselves daily with shampoos, conditioners, make-up, deodorants, colognes, and they become a habit with us. We sometimes use various products of cosmetics without skin testing, thinking that it is quite normal to do so. Although cosmetics make us feel and look beautiful and keep us smelling nice and sweet, they do have an allergic reaction and cause skin irritation. There are certain ingredients which are used in cosmetics like fragrance and preservatives which can trigger an allergic reaction.

What Is Cosmetic Allergy And How Is It Caused:
While we use cosmetics and make-up, there are two elements which might cause allergic reactions. When a substance comes into contact with your skin, then there is redness, itchiness and swelling. This is known as irritant contact dermatitis. Another allergic reaction is when a specific ingredient in a product doesn’t suit a person, it is called allergic contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis is more common among people and actually damages the skin. It starts off with patches, red and itchy and then eventually they start to become blisters which ooze, especially when you scratch it. The liquid is sometimes watery with blood in it. The area where the skin is thin, like the eyelid, is susceptible to this allergy.

Allergic contact dermatitis have symptoms like swelling, redness, itching and hives breakout. The face, lips, eyes, neck and ears are most common places where you get allergy of this type, though you can get it anywhere on the body. For example, if you use a strong deodorant which is strong, then a reaction might occur within minutes or an hour. Sometimes soaps are allergic but they take long before the symptoms occur. Sometimes, after using a product, a person may realizes that she is allergic to it.

Contact dermatitis to fragrances is the most common allergic reaction. Rashes appear on the area where you have used a spray. It is better to use a product labelled fragrance free but sometimes the labels can be misleading. Sometimes and most commonly, in irritant contact dermatitis, when the skin gets into contact with harsh substances, it breaks down and it breaks down the outer layer of the skin, making the ugly marks noticeable.

When a specific substance doesn’t suit the skin, then the body’s immune system reacts as it finds the substance harmful and foreign.

It is very common to have allergic reactions to cosmetics. It doesn’t harm the skin for a long time but it is most common amongst women as they tend to use more cosmetics. 10% of the population is at some point of their lifetime attacked with allergic reactions to cosmetics but it is not dangerous.
