Hair Styling Tools And Appliances

Hot Brushes:

The best way to use this hot brush is to wind it down the length of the hair and then hold it there for a few seconds till the heat has penetrated through the hair, then remove it. Battery operated hot brushes are available and convenient to carry when you are travelling.
Hot Brush Tip: Take neat, methodical sections when working with a hot brush or the hair may tangle. Use large clips to keep back the rest of your hair.

Straighteners:

Ceramic straighteners are flat plates to iron out frizz or curl. Using a ceramic straightener seals in moisture and natural oils so they don’t dry the hair. They smooth the cuticle and leave hair soft and static-free.
Straightening Tips: Use a styling spray before straightening. Straighteners are designed for occasional, not daily use because they function at a very high temperature, which can cause damage to the hair.

Tongs:

Styling tongs are a barrel, or prong and a depressor groove. The barrel is round, the depressor is curved to fit around the barrel when the tong is closed. The thickness of the barrel varies, and the size of the tong that is used depends on whether small, medium, or large curls are required.
Tonging Tips:
– Be careful when tonging while or bleached hair as it can discolour.
– Always use tongs on dry, not wet hair.
– If curling right up to the roots, place a comb between the tongs and the scalp so the comb forms a barrier against the heat.
– Leave tonged curls to cool before styling.

Travel Dryers:

Specially made for taking on holiday, travel dryers are usually miniature versions of standard dryers, and some even have their own small diffusers. Check that the dryer you buy has dual voltage and a travel case.

Tips:

  • Equipment should be unplugged when not in use.
  • Never use electric equipment with wet hands, and don’t use near water.
  • Only use one appliance for each socket outlet – adaptors may cause overload.
  • The cord should not be wrapped tightly around the equipment, coil it loosely before storing.
  • Tongs can be cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth, if necessary use a little alcohol to remove dirt.
  • All electrical equipment should be checked periodically to ensure that leads and connections are in good order.
  • Untwist the cord on the dryer from time to time.
  • Clean filters regularly – a blocked filter means the dryer has to work harder and will eventually overheat and cut out. If the element overheats it can distort the dryer casing.
